The Geneva airport to Vallorcine (and vice versa Vallorcine to Geneva) transfer time is around 1hr 30mins. The journey sees your traversing the entire Chamonix Valley and culminates in a spectacular climb over the Col des Montets right through the middle of the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve (keep your eyes peeled for Chamois deer as you gaze out of the transfer bus window) before your descent into Le Buet and subsequently Vallorcine.

Only 4km from the Swiss border at Chatelard Frontiere, Vallorcine is a hidden corner that has somehow managed to preserve its authenticity. Driving over there in winter can be challenging, so best leave negotiating an icy, snowy col to the experienced transfer drivers. Once you're in Vallorcine the Mont Blanc Express train terminates here and with a Carte d'Hote, Gens de Pay or Residence Secondaire card travel is free between Vallorcine and Servoz.

Alpine Hideaway!

Vallorcine is a village made up of several hamlets at the far end of the Chamonix Valley, just four kilometres from the Swiss border. This little village of just over 400 inhabitants is a real alpine hideaway, so much so that we like to call it Narnia! If you're looking for peace and quiet and authentic alpine charm Vallorcine has it in bucketloads.

To ski the Balme area you can go from the village of Le Tour (after Argentiere and through the village of Montroc), but Vallorcine also offers direct access to the pistes of Le Tour/Balme ski area with the fast and efficient bubble lift that takes you directly to the Tete de Balme/ Les Esserts side of Le Tour.

For cross country skiers and snow-shoers you'll be in heaven here with a variety of pistes between the Foyer Ski de Fond at the main Vallorcine train station and Le Buet (where the train also stops). Interlaced with the cross country trails are pedestrian tracks and a sunny, bright and col winter's afternoon, a stroll or snowshoe around here can't be beaten.

There is even a small alpine ski area of its own called 'La Poya'. To access it, take the train and get off at Le Buet stop, where there is also a large, free car park. Cross the road just up hill from the Hotel Buet and head up the steep slope. After a couple of minutes' walk (think about bringing a sledge if visiting with little babies/toddler) you arrive at the snowfront.

Here you'll find a jardin de neige with a rope lift for little ones, a small rope drag and two larger drag lifts. There's also the Airstream cafe with bubble lift 'eggs' to hide and eat in. It's a charming little corner and great for a relaxing ski 'en famille'. Snowboarders beware though, it is only drags and the main one is very steep.

ESF Vallorcine has a base here, so you can even book yourself a lesson if you need a refresher and there is Piou Piou kids club too.

Back in the village centre, the Residence Vallorcine Mont Blanc has a free open-air ice rink that the whole family can enjoy in the afternoons and evenings. The residence also offers snacks and hot drinks at the little outdoor mazot.

Life happens at an altogether different pace in Vallorcine, but there are just enough amenities to make it practical and not too many to turn it into a full-on commercial resort. You must visit the village Post Office-cum-bar, the teashop/mini supermarket and make sure you sample the food in the local eateries, namely the Hotel Buet, Moontine snack (where there's also a sledging area in winter and treehouse in summer) in le Buet, La Ferme des 3 Ours in Le Morzay and the Arete Bougnete at Le Cafe Comptoir in the main train station area.

You can also hire skis and snowboards from the Sanglard sports shop located in the Residence Vallorcine Mont Blanc or the ski hire shop at the bottom of the lift.

In summer, Vallorcine has become a Mecca for mountain bikers, with the super-steep purpose-built down hill run, complete with modules to really test your biking skills. There are also bike paths through into Switzerland where you can go to the outdoor pool in Les Marecottes, or even down to Martigny town (and hop on the train back to Vallorcine).

There is also a wide choice of sport climbing and bouldering to be done around Vallorcine and you even go canyoning in Barberine right on the Swiss border. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you will love the walking, especially around the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve of the col des Montets and the pretty hamlet of Trelechamp.

Take a walk on the wildside in Vallorcine!

• Visit the Refuge de Loriaz high up above Vallorcine where the cattled used to graze. Now open all year round, access is winter is by showshoe or ski touring and on foot in summmer

• Go walking around the waterfalls of Barberine and visit the ‘Maison de Barberine’ countryside museum during the summer season

• Take the train all the way through the Chamonix Valley to Vallorcine and meander along the short riverside walk to eat at La Ferme des Trois Ours restaurant and farm shop (the train is free from Servoz to Vallorcine with a carte d’hote card given to you by your accommodation provider)



• Ski down the Foret Verte piste from Le Tour through the pine trees to Vallorcine village and have lunch at Cafe Comptoir at the bottom of the piste or L’Arret Bougnete at the train station, before catching the lift back up



• Book yourself in for a bit of pampering at the Cinq Mondes spa at the Residence Vallorcine Mont Blanc - a massage, a facial, a manicure...the choice is yours

Music and Mountains of Vallorcine!

Fondation Gianadda
Open all year round
This renowned art, sculpture and classic car museum in Martigny hosts two new exhibitions every year (generally changing over in June and November), as well as the fascinating permanent collection. The Fondation Gianadda is open every day 09:00-19:00, entry is 20chf/18€ for adults, discounts for groups, seniors and children. Make sure you take time to wander around the sculpture garden too.

Once the skis and boards have been put away, Vallorcine in the spring and summer becomes a very chilled out place where you can meander, stay for a while and enjoy a little taste of the ‘pastoral life’.

The village has a very active music harmony group called the Echo du Buet and there are always concerts for Mother’s Day (where Mums who attend get given a little flower or a plant!) and things like the village arts and crafts fete in August.

CosmoJazz invariably includes Vallorcine and Emosson Dam on it’s programme of live, open air jazz concerts and there occasional concerts at the Hotel Buet, Cafe Comptoir Restaurant or Moon Tine Restaurant.

If you’re feeling nosy, book yourself onto a Emosson Dam tour (Jul & Aug only) where you get to actually go inside the dam. It’s free and visits are booked at the Welcome Centre at the top of the dam. You can either drive there on the twisty road through Finhaut village or take the funiculars and mini train up from Chatelard Village (open May to October).
