Evasion Mont Blanc Guide
Alpine Beauty!
This page looks at the whole area of Evasion Mont Blanc. We also have decitated indepth guides to hidden trasure Les Contamines, picture postacard Megeve and the bigger town of St.Gervais.
Far from being a super resort with a vast array of ski areas all joined together by lifts, the rather more humble Evasion Mont Blanc has grouped together ski areas that sit at the foot of Mont Blanc to create a single lift pass which is valid for all resorts, whether they are linked by lifts and pistes or not.
You might also know the area as the Pays du Mont Blanc, which is a collective of towns and villages (including ski resorts) that line in the upper valley of the River Arve (that's the wide gushing river that you might spot during your transfer trip, as it runs parallel to the main A40 motorway you take). It's a huge area that comes together to organise events and activities all year round, straddling both Savoie (73) and Haute Savoie (74) departments.
The Evasion Mont Blanc lift pass is excellent value for money, with and adult pass for six days costing just over 200€ and for that you get a whole load of resorts to explore during your week of skiing and there's enough variety that you can ski a different part each day and still not have exhausted all your possibilities by the time your pass runs out.
As you'd expect, each destination has its own distinct character. Megeve simply sparkles as a favourite winter ski holiday playground of the rich and famous, whilst Les Contamines basks in beautiful mountain panoramas, coupled with a laid back atmosphere. Meanwhile Saint Gervais perches in between the two, straddling the ski areas of Les Houches and Megeve.
Whilst all three are principally known as winter ski resorts, they are all actually quite happening places in the summer too. They all offer that classic 'lakes and mountains' holiday feel, whether you're an active bunny who wants to run up mountains and skip down valleys, or someone who just wants to kick back and relax when you're away, there's plenty to keep all ages amused all winter and summer season long.
In fact, if you're into walking, you might well want to look into doing the Tour du Mont Blanc GR5 route, a long distance hike that literally goes around Mont Blanc that traverses several of the Pays du Mont Blanc communes. The full circuit is 170km long through France, Switzerland and Italy, with sleepovers in refuges, so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness to take on the challenge.
Whether you decide Megeve, St Gervais or Les Contamines is the resort for you, Mountain Drop-offs organises transfers directly to your accommodation.
The pick of Evasion Mont Blanc resorts
Of course, we can't tell you which resort is right for you, but with our insider knowledge (our shuttle bus drivers know resorts like the backs of their hands!) we can give you a good idea of what Les Contamines, Megeve and St Gervais are like. This is what we think about each one that you won't find in any guide book:
* Megeve - the skiing often plays second fiddle to the chic-ness of the town centre, but the skiing is actually really good with areas on both side of the town to explore. Make sure you head into the car-free centre, as just driving along the main road through the town doesn't give any hint of the cuteness in the old village part!

* St Gervais - has the feel of a proper 'working' town, with the weekly market and commerces open all year round. The main skiing area is just out of town, but with a massive free car park, making access to the slopes easy. If you want to ski Megeve but not pay Megeve prices, this is the place to stay, as the pistes are very much linked, so much so that you're often not sure if you're in Megeve or St Gervais whilst you're merrily skiing along

* Les Contamines - we think this is the true hidden gem of the whole of the Pays du Mont Blanc. In a cul-de-sac at the end of a pretty valley, we can't say that it offers shed loads of deep and steep skiing, but it is lovely and never seems over crowded. What's more, despite being fairly low in terms of altitude, somehow the place seems to be able to keep its snow, meaning it of tends to open early and close late in the season
