As well being famous for Evian mineral water, the town boasts a wonderful promenade along the shoreline of the lake, beautifully preserved Belle Epoque architecture from the 20s and 30s, as well as a world-renowned golf course, excellent conference facilities and top class hotels with sumptuous spas too.
Our guide to Evian

Evian is all about discrete luxury. Hidden on the hillside you'll find the Royal Hotel, one of the most luxurious five star hotels in Europe. Built in 1909 by the famous architect Hebrard, the hotel boasts many royal visitors and was host to world leaders for the 2003 G8 summit. The Royal was not the only hotel to be built in Evian les Bains in the early 20th century. The healing thermal waters were discovered decades before, but the town saw an influx of tourists flocking to the resort for a therapeutic spa holiday during the 20s and 30s.
Two very renowned visitors were Louis and Auguste Lumiere, credited with being behind France's first foray into cinematography. Their family holiday home, the Villa Lumiere, right on the edge of the lake is now the rather impressive Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) for Evian. You can take a peek at the gorgeous rooms during normal office hours for free.
Zipping forward to the current day, Evian is still attracting visitors for business and pleasure from all over the world. The resort (which is also a commuter town for people working in Switzerland) is 50km from Geneva International airport and even just journey to Evian with Mountain Drop-offs is spectacular as you travel along the lake and catch glimpses of the millionaire mansions and glistening waters as you go.
Standing side by side with the art-deco hotels, there are also brand new buildings such as the lakeside Hilton hotel with its swanky Buddha Bar Spa (a great place to go for Sunday brunch, but it is expensive!). The main streets of the town are set back from the lakeside and boast a good mix of restaurants and a small selection of boutiques.
Another major attraction to Evian is the magnificent golf course. Home to the Evian Masters, one of the biggest professional women's golf competitions in the world held every July, the course is considered to be one of the best in Europe. The Evian Masters Golf club is part of the luxury Evian Royal Resort, but open to non-members as well as members and there is excellent tuition on offer too. Mountain Drop-offs is always available for private transfers to the golf course, which is open all year round, with the exception of December.
Whilst the Royal Resort and golf course offering panoramic views of the lake from their elevated position on the hillside behind Evian town, the lakeside promenade is perfect for a stroll right on the edge of the lake and the waterfront area of Evian is truly delightful.
There are gardens, play areas and even mini skate parks dotted along the promenade, as well as restaurants and cafes. Make sure you stop by the Fontaine Musicale which puts on a show several times a day with water fountains and music. Evian port has recently been redeveloped and is now a very smart marina welcoming yachts and boats of all sizes into the harbour.
Although Evian les Bains is in France, the Swiss boat operator Compagnie Generale de Navigation (CGN) offers regular links with Lausanne, which is directly opposite Evian on the Swiss side of the lake. Just 13km away by water, many people who live in Evian work in Lausanne. In summer, you can also take the boat to the very picturesque little French town of Yvoire, further up the lake from Evian.
For culture vultures, the Palais Lumiere, a former spa hotel, was renovated in 2006 to create a conference and exhibition centre. There are regular temporary art exhibitions that are well worth a visit and make sure you check out the impressive statues and the domed ceiling in the entrance hall.
If you're feeling lucky, the Evian Casino is a big draw. Holding the title of the largest themed casino in Europe, there are five restaurants and bars to choose from and the gaming tables attract a mix of tourists and high-rollers from nearby Geneva, particularly at weekends.
In conclusion, Evian les Bains is still a cut above the rest when it comes to exclusive holidays and short breaks, thanks to the four and five star hotels in resort. If you're looking for a relaxing, indulgent break Evian is a great choice and perfect if you're organising an event or seminar with delegates arriving from all over the world, thanks to the easy access from Geneva.
Mountain Drop-offs provides private transfers from Geneva Airport to Evian les Bains in vehicles transporting up to eight passengers with luggage (and golf clubs for free!) in safety. We will be at the airport to meet you, not the other way round. We will also make sure you arrive in time for your flight back at the end of your stay.
