With an excellent reputation for epic snowfalls, Flaine is a great place to ski and board. It's also the highest resort in the Grand Massif, which groups Flaine with Les Carroz, Samoens, Morillon and Sixt, all linked by lifts and pistes.

We've all heard of the high-rise purpose-built ski resorts that are dotted around France. But whilst Flaine is certainly purpose-built and the architecture may not be to your liking, it was actually pioneering when it opened in 1968 being the first resort to have snow cannons (there are 213 of them now!) and the first to have communal gas heating.

Designed by Marcel Breuer of Bauhaus fame, it's all about concrete and convenience, but has a definite avant-garde twist to it all. In fact, the hotel 'Le Flaine', the 'Betelgeuse' residence and the church are all classed as 'Historic Monuments of France'. Take a wander around resort and you'll stumble across amazing sculptures, including the 12m-high 'Tete de Femme' by a certain Picasso!

Flaine may be something of a surreal setting for a ski or snowboarding holiday, but the big advantage of Flaine is that it was designed to be the perfect car-free ski in, ski out resort - and it works. We have to say everything is very well laid out and arranged in resort. Flaine can be divided into three areas, all of which are connected by elevators and covered walkways, so you are never far from the ski lifts and each one has its own shops, bars and restaurants. Flaine Foret is perched at 1700m, Flaine Forum is a 1600m and Flaine Front de Neige is at 1500m.

All were developed in the 1960s and 1970s, with the more recent Hameau de Flaine perched above the main areas appearing in 1990 and Flaine Montsoleil being built between the main resort and the Hameau in 2008.

Montsoleil and Hameau de Flaine, which looks like a settlement of Canadian log cabins and offers a more alpine chalet style appeal, are a bit away from the action, but are connected by pistes and the free shuttle bus that runs every 15mins between the hamlets, the col de la Pierre Carree (where the cross country skiing and snowshoeing is) and the main resort and lifts.

As for the skiing, Flaine has a well-deserved reputation for excellent snow cover. At 1600m, the resort isn't especially high, but it is in a huge bowl reaching up to 2500m, which boasts superb snow retention, offering skiing from mid-December to the end of April each year.

In fact, the name Flaine comes from the local legend of a giant living in the valley who laid down to rest his head in this open bowl shape, with 'Flainoz' being colloquial French for 'pillow', the name got transformed over time in Flaine (or so the story goes!).

The 265km of pistes that make up the Grand Massif ski area will keep you easily entertained for a week of skiing, with Flaine itself boasting 64 pistes and 23 lifts. There are also dedicated snowshoeing pistes and cross country skiing loops too.

That's winter covered, but what about summer? Well, Flaine is pretty quiet in summer, but it is worth heading up there to see the incredible landscape without snow - huge swathes of fissured rock, which is really quite impressive.

With so much to ski and do in Flaine, here's our pick of the best when it comes to skiing and boarding in Flaine:

* Ski the Piste de Cascades - you'll need a Grand Massif full lift pass for this 14km run that starts as the Serpentine from the top of the Les Grandes Platieres cable car, where you can great views of Mont Blanc. The piste soon becomes 'Cascade' and weaves its way through the forest and snowy prairies well away from the lifts and the main ski area to finish up in the village of Sixt Fer Cheval. After that, it's a free shuttle ride back to Samoens, where you can head up on the bubble and back to Flaine. Definitely recommended as it's like skiing in a different world!

* Combe de Gers - it's an evil drag lift to get you back up (take note snowboarders!) but this little north-facing corner of Flaine is free ride paradise in compact and bijou form, along with the Veret drag too.

* Tete de Lindars - this is the highest point of Flaine's ski area at 2561m and as well as amazing views down into the Arve valley from the top, you've got a couple of serious pistes back down and lots of powder opportunities too

* Beginners will love the four free lifts in Flaine. To get your ski legs whatever the weather, the covered magic carpets at Pre are great and it's free access on the bucket lift at Flaine Forum, as well as the magic carpet at Bissac

* Freestylers will love Flaine's snow park with a twist - Ze Forest combines freestyle modules with back country in a dedicated area underneath the Diable piste, giving you plenty of ways to practice your grabs and jumps

* Go ice driving! Get behind the wheel of a Subaru or Renault on this slippery circuit of ice in the heart of Flaine's Front de Neige area. There is a wide range of experiences available from tasters that give you five laps at around 50€, to three day courses so you can really hone your snow driving skills. Cars include the Impreza Sti, Megane RS, Clio RS and Twingo RS. That's serious va-va-voom Flaine style!

* Ride the snow on a quad! These agile all terrain vehicles love a bit of snow and ice. You can do 30mins, 1hr or 1.5hrs on the circuit, or go for an evening quad trek that includes dinner at the Ferme du Sartot mountain restaurant

* Relax in the pool and spa centre. Residence Le Centaure is open to residents and non-residents alike and boasts a lovely 25m heated indoor swimming pool, along with a kids' pool, hamman, sauna and jacuzzi. This is also where you can get a massage to ease those aching ski legs and beauty treatments too. And if you want to work off all those extra fondue calories, head to the well-equipped fitness gym

* Go sledging. Flaine has a dedicated slope for tobogganing and sledging which starts just by the famous Jean Dubuffet black and white sculpture in Flaine Forum. Great for all ages, it's the perfect way to round off a day on the slopes with a bit of a slide-fest on your luge!

* In summer play a round of golf with impressive views at the Flaine-Les Carroz golf course on the Col de la Pierre Carree. It's an impressive high-altitude course that'll quite literally take your breathe away whilst you putt!

* Enjoy the mountain food all year round at restaurants such as Le Chalet des Molliets at the foot of the Molliets lift on the road between Les Carroz and Flaine - we love the cabinet full of homemade desserts

* Go on an evening snowmobile tour - either drive yourself for 85€ or go as a passenger for 45€ for a magical way to see the whole Flaine resort area as night falls
