This page is about the collective Portes du Soleil ski area, we also have an indidual guide to Morzine, along with sepertate pages for both Les Gets and Avoriaz.

Two countries, over 650km of pistes, 200 lifts and 90 mountain restaurants - that's the Portes du Soleil!

A total of 12 different resorts including Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets make up the Portes du Soleil area, which straddles France and Switzerland, with every one linked by lifts. Just an hour away from Geneva airport, the Portes du Soleil boasts everything from purpose-built ski-in/ski-out centres, to small family resorts

This behemoth of a ski area includes eight main French resorts and four Swiss ones, with three smaller villages in the Val d'Illiez grouped together as one, so if you count each individually, there are actually 14 access points to this exciting domaine.

Bordering on to Lac Leman (or Lake Geneva as we all seem to know it by!) on one side and heading in the direction of the Arve valley on the other, the area, which is watched over by the Dents du Midi (the highest peak at 3275m) offers a rich diversity of activities in both winter and summer, making it an area ripe for exploring as a couple, in a group or with the family all year round.

How did the Portes du Soleil come about?

Since 1964!

The existance of the Portes du Soleil is all down to a group of skiing friends, headed by the former French downhill ski champion, Jean Vuarnet (and yes, he is behind the sunglasses of the same name!), who had a vision of creating a massive linked ski area much like North American grouped resorts.

The deed was done in 1964 and from that moment on, there was a definite 'entente cordiale' between this corner of France and Switzerland in the Massif du Chablais. In fact, there is a local saying that 'the hares and foxes say goodnight to each other' around these mountainous parts, such is the friendship between these two countries.

Today the partnership goes from strength to strength and in 2015 the resorts heartily celebrated 50 years of the Portes du Soleil area, with the opening of two new high-speed chair lifts to link Super Chatel and Pre la Joux and facilitate the access between the Avoriaz/Les Gets/Morzine side and the Morgins side. And we're sure there's more investment to come to keep the Portes du Soleil right at the top of its game.

So what does the Portes du Soleil have to offer?

The simple answer is everything. There's always loads to keep all the family occupied all year round in the 'gateway to the sun'.

Of course in winter it is a sporting paradise for skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers, paragliders, ski tourers, freestylers and freeriders alike, with a modern lift system that will get you to every corner of the Portes du Soleil quickly and comfortably. Even those who don't like the snow are well catered for with top notch leisure facilities at resort level.

Portes du Soleil lac de montriond In summer, the Portes du Soleil transforms itself into a mountain biking mecca with miles and miles of trails, freestyle and dirt parks, so you will never be bored on your bikes. With 24 lifts open in the summer, walkers and hikers will love it too, with lots of mountain grazing meadows (called 'alpages') to wander through, cows to meet, auberges to eat at and lakes to picnic by too.

Portes du Soleil dog There are also several key events that run every year across the Portes du Soleil resorts, such as the Rock the Pistes live music festival, the Rallye du Mont Blanc, the road bike Tour du Chablais-Leman-Portes du Soleil, the Grande Odyssee husky race and the famous Pass'Portes du Soleil mountain bike festival that is one of the key events of the summer season around these parts.

One thing's for sure - each resort has it's own personality and appeals to different types of people whatever time of year you choose to visit.
